Keep up the good work!! I would strongly recommend that those "powers that be" who clearly don't get it receive a copy of "The Mask of Benovelence written by Harlan Lane. Make sure that while they may consider the start of the book to be pretty harsh, to try to keep an open mind and continue to read until it actually helps them to appreciate finally the whole point made by Harlan.

If Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin decides to end the deaf school then I will welcome him to do that because it's time to leave the state because our school has been controlled by the state for almost 160 years. It's time to go and develop our own school with strong structure of ASL program.

For sure they can't remove ASL from deaf schools because it's against the Federal law. I know that you will win anyway. I suggest you hire a lawyer and start ACT soon. Your lawyer(s) can take care of it.

I hope you will send a letter of confirmation detailing that conversation. Because his comment about charter schools is certainly troubling. What about IDEA and FAPE? Did he forget about these 2 laws?

Get it confirmed in writing.

As a former teacher in deaf education in Johnson County, I think the below quote is a GREAT idea! It's time to build an ASL Indiana Charter School for the Deaf. My hearing kid's go a Charter school supported by Ball State and the school has the freedom to implement the curriculm that they feel is best for their students and not be hindered by non-supporters. Stop fighting with the 'Oral' people. They will never change just as the ASL people will never change.

'He brought up the issue by asking us if we have explored into different options for ourselves? If you [we] want to have [ISD] to be a Deaf-only run school, we should consider a charter school to run by ourselves…'

Greetings to all!

Let me start by commending Marvin, Kim, and the rest of the committee for the great work you're doing! As a mother of an ISD student, I fully support ASL!!

I just finished reading three articles about our situation with the board and a thought occurred to me - in two of the articles, our test scores were mentioned; more specifically, how low they are and that only 21% passed the math and reading portion last year. Additionally, an article mentioned that our graduation rates are consistently low.

Is this why Governor Daniels appointed these board members who support oralism? To increase our scores? Shouldn't he know that ISD services students that are "D/deaf plus" or do the statistics mentioned in the articles pertain only to students who are potentially college-bound (normal IQ and above) and not life-skills? If they pertain only to college-bound students, which I don't think they do, then we need to address this issue separately.

I have the feeling, as everyone else does, that there is a hidden political agenda here. So glad we're doing something about it, but I am concerned about our numbers and what they say to the world. Are the numbers mentioned in the articles accurate? Should we offer other information? What are everyone's feelings?

In thirty years of experience in the corporate world and I have seen many things happen.

My advice... you're wasting time, start looking elsewhere. There are plenty of supports and funds out there. If you keep bugging them, it not going to help. They will keep finding more lame excuses. I would suggest that you start looking around. Keep the door open for bigger picture than focusing on one small peculair service. There are many opportunities out there, you have to look for it.

There is an old saying, "There is a big forest, but in order to pick the right tree will lead you to build success."
